The parade was originally called the Santa Claus Lane Parade and was started by businessman Harry Blaine and the Hollywood Boulevard Association to attract holiday shoppers to the area. 
 * Grand Marshals
The first grand marshal of the parade was comedian Joe E. Brown in 1932. Other notable grand marshals have included Bob Hope, Gene Autry, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, and Jeremy Renner. 
 * Support
The parade supports the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, which distributes 18 million toys to 7 million children every year. 
 * Broadcast
The parade is taped and broadcast on The CW Network and KTLA 5.
