Before we renovated this house, this room was a collection of small details that caused daily frustration.
Plastic floors with exposed edges that cut your feet so you could never walk barefoot. A fireplace with no original surround, just an awkward timber border and nowhere to rest the things that matter. No proper storage for books, so everything felt untidy and unsettled, balanced on the floor rather than belonging.
None of these things were dramatic on their own. Together, they made the room feel wrong.
Now the space gives us real joy. Natural timber floors and soft rugs that feel good enough to walk barefoot. Books have a home. Plants have somewhere to live. Discreet cupboards allow everyday necessities to disappear. The fireplace is rebuilt with a reproduction late Georgian marble surround, practical, proportioned and authentic to the house, with a proper mantel for the objects that carry meaning.
And without any prompting, this has become the cat’s favourite spot in the house...
