When Clean Food Met a Dirty System —
After months of emails with the category manager for frozen foods at Sobeys, we were this close to landing Scooby-Doo EATS premium burgers and hot dogs on shelves across Ontario. They admitted our ingredients were cleaner, our concept fresher, and our brand stronger than what’s currently in stores. Guess what? It competes with their own private label brand.
Then—out of nowhere—the deal collapsed.
No explanation. No feedback.
Instead, I was told to:
💰 Pay $100K for shelf space (“slotting fees”).
📰 Buy $8K of ads in an in-store magazine no one reads.
📉 Accept a forced price cut that would have made Scooby-Doo EATS sell at a loss.
This is what too many 🇨🇦 Canadian entrepreneurs face: corporate gatekeeping dressed up as “retail standards.”
Cleaner food gets blocked while chemical giants get priority because they can pay to play.
