Solar Panels vs. Solar Blankets
When it comes to keeping your power needs met on an overlanding adventure, solar energy is a top solution. But the choice between mounted solar panels and portable solar blankets can have a big impact on your setup and efficiency.
Mounted Solar Panels:
Mounted panels on your vehicle are a great “set it and forget it” option. They’re always working as long as there’s sunlight, and you don’t need to worry about setting them up every time you stop. However, they come with some drawbacks:
-Shade: Even a small patch of shade from trees or clouds can reduce the panel’s efficiency significantly.
-Dirt and Debris: Dust, mud, or leaves can block sunlight and lower performance. You’ll need to clean them regularly, which can be tricky when they’re on your roof.
-Fixed Angle: Since the panels are mounted flat, they might not always be at the optimal angle to capture the most sunlight, especially during early morning or late afternoon hours.
