SOSSUSVLEI Sossusvlei is like a generic term even if it describes a very specific area. Behind this generic term, you have some myths: Dune 45, Deadvlei, Big Daddy, Big Mama,… In the oldest desert in the World you will also find some of the biggest dunes in the World. What is interesting when you look at a map is this tongue of hard land going into the middle of dunes. Literally, Sossusvlei means “dead-end marsh”. The Taushab river flows from Eastern side and Sossussvlei is its limit... when it actually flows that far. Most of the time, the river does not even reach the salt and clay pan. Deadvlei is its neighbor famous for its dead trees. They are said to be 900 years old. Though they are not fossil trees, they don't decomposed due to the extreme dry climate.
