These are the same questions I had and sometimes still do now. But remember any great finding is off the back of sometimes decades of work across 100s of papers meaning 100s 1000s of people made a contribution at some point. 
Yes we all aspire to make a huge difference but don’t let the SIZE of your contribution affect the QUALITY and IMPORTANCE of what your research will contribute to.
