Suffering is a choice, based on the distinction between physical pain and the emotional response to it. Pain is an inevitable part of life, but how we relate to this pain and how long we dwell in it is our conscious choice. «Pain is inevitable, but suffering is a choice.» We can learn to respond to pain differently so as not to turn it into constant torment.
