The Osun-Oshogbo Festival is a 28 day celebration steeped in tradition in key parts. Each carried its own spiritual significance and rich history.
The Oshogbo Festival begins with a sacred ritual called Iwo Popo, which translates to path clearing. This is not just another symbolic gesture. It is a deeply spiritual moment for the people of Oshogbo. The streets are swept clean, both physically and spiritually, removing evil forces and preparing the town for the goddess Osun’s blessings. This ritual reenacts the discovery of the Osun River by the early settlers of Oshogbo, who found prosperity by its waters while looking for an alternate water source, but in turn found life and spirituality. It is also a powerful reminder of renewal for the community.
