Today millions of people around the world celebrate Mother’s Day.
And rightly so.
Mothers are the reason every single one of us exists.
Their sacrifice, care, and strength shape generations.
But there’s something most people don’t know about this holiday.
Mother’s Day as we know it today was popularised in 1908 by Anna Jarvis, who wanted a day dedicated to personal gratitude and handwritten letters to mothers.
No gifts.
No advertising.
No corporate campaigns.
Just appreciation.
Within a few years something happened.
Florists.
Greeting card companies.
Restaurants.
Retail brands.
They realised this day could become one of the most profitable retail events of the year.
Ironically, Anna Jarvis spent much of her life fighting to cancel Mother’s Day, believing corporations had hijacked the meaning of the holiday.
Today the day generates tens of billions in spending globally every year.
