It elevated our species from Hunter gatherers to settlers and was the birth of modern civilization as we know it. But we took it too far. The existing dominant capitalistic system stretches out this simple act of "growing food to it's consumption" into long complex supply chains that create unimaginable excess and wastage. Why? So that the profits can be aggregated towards a few in the center who keep getting richer.
