The organ consists of 3 pairs of orthogonally oriented semi-circular canals that detects rotational head movements, and an otolithic organ (saccule and utricle) that detects linear acceleration. Information from the organ is sent to the 🧠 by vestibular part of the 8th cranial nerve to understand the relationship between the head and the body in space. Abnormalities anywhere along the system manifest with symptoms of vertigo/dizziness/imbalance.
