US President Donald Trump claimed that he “knew about the Strait [of Hormuz] that it would be a weapon” and that he “predicted Osama bin Laden would knock out the World Trade Center.”
In a Washington DC press conference on Monday, Trump also claimed the US had “obliterated” Iran but repeated his call for other nations to help him keep the Strait of Hormuz “open.”
Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi has said the Strait - which handles around 20 per cent of global oil traffic - "is open to friends and non-hostile countries, but closed to enemies and those who collaborate with them."
Trump’s 2000 book ‘The America We Deserve’ contained one passing mention of Osama bin Laden - “One day we’re told that a shadowy figure with no fixed address named Osama bin-Laden is public enemy number one, and US jetfighters lay waste to his camp in Afghanistan. He escapes back under some rock, and a few news cycles later it’s on to a new enemy and new crisis.”
