This October I’m sharing “spooky but cool” animals: the ones with bad PR, eerie looks, or moonlit habits that remind us nature isn’t always cute.
Starting spooky season with the spotted hyena, an animal that is usually type cast as the villain but plays a vital role.
We saw lions feasting on this African buffalo one evening and when we came back the next morning, the hyenas and vultures had moved in. It might look gruesome, but it’s actually incredible because nothing goes to waste. Every part of the carcass gets used, keeping the ecosystem clean and balanced.
Hyenas might have bad PR ever since The Lion King, but they’re nature’s ultimate recyclers.
