Last month, I went to Rocky Mountain National Park to see (and hear) the elk rut, and the mountains were alive with the sound of elk love songs. The bulls bugle to show off their strength, attract females, and deter other males. The sound starts as a deep growl and rises into a high-pitched scream that echoes across the valleys. It’s like nature’s version of a battle cry meets boy band audition. Fun fact: a bull can bugle more than 100 times a day during peak rut.
