This little Broad-tailed Hummingbird was perched at the denver.audubon Kingery Nature Center in the early morning, furiously scratching his head. I appreciated the moment of stillness because while photographing birds in flight is hard, photographing hummingbirds in flight is basically level: expert. In keeping with my goal of learning one cool fact about every animal I photograph, I looked up that shimmery throat patch. It’s called a gorget, and he can actually control how it reflects light by adjusting the angle of his feathers to the sun. It’s how he attracts mates, defends his turf, and makes his presence known. Basically, it’s his Tinder profile and home security system all in one. Swipe right??
