On December 31, 1782, sixteen British Loyalist transport ships, part of a fleet fleeing Charleston, South Carolina, wrecked while trying to enter the St. Augustine inlet in East Florida to escape American forces. These ships, carrying refugees and military, were lost in a severe storm, with many artifacts from the “Storm Wreck” on exhibit at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum.
