March is Florida Archaeology Month and the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum is celebrating the shipwreck discovered by maritime archaeologists in 2009 off the shore in St. Augustine, Florida. In 1782 on New Year’s Eve, 16 British Loyalist vessels from Charleston, South Carolina wrecked on a sandbar off St. Augustine, Florida’s historic inlet. The Storm Wreck was discovered by underwater archaeologists with the Lighthouse Archaeology Maritime Program (LAMP) team. They excavated and unearthed scattered remains of the ship and its contents on the ocean floor from 2010-2015. The conservation team has preserved thousands of artifacts, many on view in the Wrecked! Exhibit in the Keepers’ House.
