Never in my lifetime did I think we'd get to this moment.⁠ ⁠ K-pop lightsticks lit up the Academy Awards stage Sunday night as EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami performed “Golden” from Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters at the Dolby Theatre. In a first for the Oscars, every attendee was given a K-pop lightstick, the glowing rods central to fan culture, with stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, Steven Spielberg and Emma Stone waving them along to the music.⁠ ⁠ The performance opened with traditional Korean percussionists and hanbok-clad dancers before the trio took center stage dressed in white, backed by Korean instrumentalists and choreography inspired by the film’s folklore. KPop Demon Hunters follows fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X as they secretly battle demons through music.⁠ ⁠ By the end of the night, the film won Best Animated Feature, while “Golden” made history as the first K-pop song to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
