The New York crew, centered around producers Evilgiane, Harrison, and Eera, grew out of the city’s skate culture and internet rap scenes in the late 2010s. Polo Perks has said he linked with Evilgiane in 2018, right when Giane was “putting together something called Surf Gang,” which helps date the collective’s formation to that period.
By 2021, Surf Gang had become a real movement, with Vice describing them as a 12-member NYC crew whose sound blended drill, emo rap, SoundCloud rap, and experimental pop into what they half-jokingly called “post-rap.”
