What if the universe and the human body followed the same blueprint?
This 16th-century Tibetan painting illustrates the Kalachakra Tantra—known as the “Wheel of Time”—a Buddhist cosmological system that links the outer universe with the inner world of body and mind.
In Kalachakra teachings, the same elements, earth, fire, water, air, space, and awareness, form both the cosmos and the human being. The cycles of time that shape the universe also shape us.
We continue this year’s "Himalayan Art Up Close" series with Rubin Senior Curator Dr. Elena Pakhoutova and Smarthistory’s Dr. Beth Harris, exploring how this intricate painting visualizes a world in which everything is interconnected.
