The city of Orlando has unveiled new plans for a permanent memorial to honour the 49 victims of the 2016 attack at Pulse Nightclub, as the tenth anniversary of the tragedy approaches. The design includes a central plaza marking the footprint of the original club, with the dance floor location at its centre. Artifacts from the building, including the nightclub’s original sign and a preserved section of the dance floor, will also be incorporated into the memorial. A key feature, called the Angel Ellipse, will honour each of the victims by name. Plans also include a reflective pool, a memorial pillar, a grassy Survivor’s Common, a Survivor’s Tree and private gathering spaces for reflection. The new site will replace the temporary memorial wall created after the shooting, which followed the Orlando nightclub shooting.
