KYIV I was telling my beautiful Ukrainian artist friend dariahlazatova the other day that we’d just discovered that my ‘Russian’ grandfather’s family was actually from Kyiv. I was telling her that they had left Kyiv shortly before it became Ukrainian to come to the UK as Jewish refugees. So I was wondering if that meant I was now actually part Ukrainian rather than part Russian, as I had always thought. Her response was this - Kyiv has always been a Ukrainian city that happened to be under the rule/occupation of several empire reigns at different times in history. This is so important to remember today, the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion, as Ukraine continues to stand strong and fight so bravely after already having lost so much.
