Over the past week, a new baseball hero has emerged for the Red Sox and Team Italy’s Cinderella-type run to the semifinals in this year’s World Baseball Classic, and his name is Greg Weissert. Filling the role of Team Italy’s closer, he had locked down games all tournament long. The numbers themselves show it in three appearances throughout their run, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out five hitters and going a perfect three for three in save opportunities. Those saves would come in crucial opportunities for Team Italy, starting with Great Britain, where Weissert would record his first save. Despite allowing a hit and two walks, he’d strike out a batter and remain unscathed as they’d take the victory 7-4. Then, in their next game against Team USA and with one-out in the ninth, he’d enter in looking to close it out.
