There’s a weight to what the energy industry is carrying right now that I didn’t fully appreciate until working with Western Energy Institute. This morning I spent time with 250 professionals at the Western Energy Institute’s 2026 WE Connect conference, the people quietly responsible for keeping our communities powered while the world makes increasingly complicated demands on them. The thing that came up again and again: demand is accelerating faster than the infrastructure to meet it. AI alone is reshaping the energy equation in ways that would have seemed abstract just a few years ago. These teams aren’t theorizing about the future, they’re solving for it while simultaneously making sure the lights stay on tonight. I left genuinely moved by the seriousness with which people are approaching this. Not in a performative way. In the way that happens when the stakes are real and the people in the room know it.
