Before the war, about 100 ships would pass through the Strait of Hormuz each day. Now it’s just one or two tankers, says Matt Smith, an oil market analyst at Kpler who monitors ship activity. Many ships are avoiding the crucial waterway after Iran declared passage “forbidden.” The few ships that have moved through the strait are mostly from Iran. Smith and his team made a surprising discovery: Iran has exported 100,000 more barrels of oil daily than it did before the war, and most of it is believed to be going to China.
