This week I’m rebuilding my entire drive shaft system: all new feathering prop, cutlass bearing, dripless shaft seal, shaft saver, and coupling. Feels good to finally be putting things back on the boat instead of ripping them off… but there’s a catch. I have absolutely no way of knowing if any of this works until the boat goes back in the water. if I’ve done anything wrong, I won’t find out until it really matters. Worst case? It leaks. Best case? We’re one step closer to sailing around the world. In September 2026 I will begin a 30,000 mile solo nonstop circumnavigation of the planet aboard my 1998 Pacific Seacraft 40, "Phoenix do Mar", meaning Phoenix of the Sea in Portuguese. Departing from Port Townsend, Washington, this voyage will cross the world’s most remote oceans in one continuous passage and take up to eight months to complete.
