This week’s ‘Image of the Week’ marks the upcoming #WorldGlacierDay on 21 March with a #Copernicus Sentinel-3 view of southern Iceland’s ice caps. 🧊 The large white expanse on the right side of the image is Vatnajökull - the largest ice cap in Iceland and in Europe by volume. DYK scientists estimate that Iceland’s glaciers have lost approximately 16% of their mass since 1900, almost half of it since the mid-1990s? The United Nations World Glacier Day aims to raise global awareness of glaciers’ vital roles: in the Earth’s climate system, in freshwater availability, in ecosystems, and in human livelihoods.
