When it comes to letterpress printing, everything that is printed has to be 0.918 of an inch, also known as Type High. Because finding wood that fits that height requirement, sometimes woodcuts were recycled and a new engraving was made on the other side. We have some double sided woodcuts in our shop and we are highlighting one today because March 18th is Global Recycling Day. For today, Jared letterpress printed both sides of a recycled woodcut from the Lewis Winter Collection. This was made in the 1890s. The first side depicts a steer. The other side shows a small building with a sign stating “CENTRAL VIEW.” This was printed with rhodamine red rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #GlobalRecyclingDay #recycling #sachistorymuseum #museum #printing
