⚕️ When a living kidney donor undergoes a contralateral nephrectomy (the surgical removal of one kidney), the remaining "solitary" kidney must immediately adapt to maintain the body's homeostatic balance. This biological phenomenon is known as compensatory renal adaptation. While we are born with two kidneys, the body is remarkably efficient at conserving resources; a study from King Abdulaziz Medical City reports that the single remaining kidney typically recovers approximately 70% of the original dual-kidney function within the first year.⁠ ⁠ This transition is driven by a mechanism called hyperfiltration.
