Dundy County-Stratton made history, capturing the program’s first girls basketball state championship with a 43-39 win over Wynot in the Class D-2 title game at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The top-seeded Tigers finished the season 28-1, adding another milestone to what has become a successful stretch for Dundy County-Stratton girls athletics.
“I couldn’t be prouder,” coach Matt Schaub said. “What a smart, super athletic group. I’m really fortunate to get the chance to coach them.”
The Tigers used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from sixth-seeded Wynot and secure the title.
Dundy County-Stratton’s success comes from a tight-knit roster at the small southwest Nebraska school.
“We’re always together, being from such a small school,” Abi Spargo said. “You know everyone, you’re around them all the time, and I think that helps us a lot having such a good connection with everyone. It’s fun to see so much success come out of it.”
