Chichén Itzá on Portra 400. This was such a cool place to go and learn about; the Mayan ruins. Chichén Itzá is now classified as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The first big picture is El Castillo, the Temple of Kulkulkan, which was built to be the world's largest calendar, and this was before calendars even existed! The temple was built around 1000 AD, and is most famous for what happens during the spring and autumn equinox. When the sun sets at these times the sun's rays create a shadow across the Kulkulkan temple that gives the appearance of a serpent slithering down the staircase. The serpent is symbolic of Mother Nature as well as the powers of life and death (including water) in the Mayan Culture. Each of the four sides of the Kulkulkan temple represents a different season, with 91 days (each steep step standing for one day) representing the shape of the stones is what allowed the Mayans to use El Castillo as a calendar.
