Community backlash over a Bondurant library book club selection for sixth to eighth graders led officials to cancel the event, thrusting the local dispute into a broader fight over age-appropriate material. The Bondurant Community Library had scheduled its In the Middle book club to meet Tuesday, March 17, to discuss "This Book Is Gay" by Juno Dawson and make rainbow friendship bracelets. By the time the library board met Monday, March 16, opposition had been building through social media posts and local organizing. Residents who argued the book’s content was not age-appropriate for middle school students packed both the board meeting and the City Council meeting that same day. The board then canceled the book club event, citing “safety concerns for patrons and staff,” according to library board president Joshua Bryant, who did not comment further beyond thanking the community for their feedback.
