This is Earl Young, one of greats you’ve definitely heard, but probably never heard of. In this clip from a Dutch documentary about the history of EDM music he talks about how he invented the disco groove, which led to the advent of club music. He became the heartbeat for songwriter/producer team Gamble and Huff who popularized the “Sound of Philadelphia.” In his own words: he WAS the drum machine. Check out our stories for a link to our very own playlist featuring some of the best cuts from his reign on the drum throne. And remember, Disco doesn’t suck, it’s just misunderstood (look up the bigoted backbone of the “disco sucks” movement sometime to learn why). Enjoy!
