In the eyes of his followers AND enemies, this was a claim of divinity. In their culture, all sin was ultimately an offense against God so only God had the authority to forgive sins across the board. By taking on this divine prerogative, Jesus was acting and speaking as God. And healing the man’s body only further proved his authority.
