Children’s Hospital Colorado Sports Medicine Center is committed to supporting young athletes in all aspects, from maximizing nutrition to conducting concussion research. One area that needs important consideration is regarding the risks that competitive sports contribute to psychological and physical stress. We know that middle school and high school social stressors place a lot of emphasis on physical appearance, and young athletes are at as much risk to develop eating disorders as are their school peers. In a study of Division 1 NCAA athletes, over one-third of female athletes reported attitudes and symptoms placing them at risk for anorexia nervosa. It’s important to intervene early to support youth who may be at risk for eating disorders, and coaches are often in a position to identify concerns and be a trusted adult that can support a youth and their family in seeking help.
