Dr. Shirley Pooler Kinsey embodies the highest ideals of Florida A&M University—excellence, service, scholarship, and a deep commitment to lifting others as she climbs. A St. Augustine native and valedictorian, she came to FAMU on scholarship, pledging Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Beta Alpha Chapter in 1965. Her time on “The Hill,” during the Civil Rights Movement, shaped a lifelong dedication to justice and education. Over four decades, Dr. Kinsey has helped raise more than $40 million for charitable and educational causes, including $11 million for FAMU Life Gets Better Scholarships. She has supported more than 300 students—many from Los Angeles—in accessing higher education at FAMU and other HBCUs. Her impact across FAMU is both visionary and tangible. She helped develop the Distinguished Alumni Program across schools and colleges, created the Lee Hall Brick Naming Program, and led efforts to raise $100,000 to restore the Foster-Tanner Gallery.
