Piece by piece, Cal basketball is building itself up. Led by head coaches Mark Madsen and Charmin Smith, both programs are setting the stage to be teams that contend for March Madness runs. Men’s basketball broke out this season for its first 20-plus win campaign since 2016-17 and will participate in the N.I.T. while keeping their eyes on dancing next year. Women’s basketball backed up its March Madness appearance last season by making its third consecutive postseason tournament. The youthful squad battled for a 18-13 regular season record and an invite to the W.B.I.T.
