On March 14, 2026, Mississippi State handed No. 1 Tennessee its first loss of the season with a 1–0 win in Starkville.
Tennessee entered the game undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the country, but Mississippi State delivered a statement as SEC play began. Peja Goold threw a complete-game shutout, recording 10 strikeouts while allowing just two hits and no walks against one of the nation’s top offenses.
After seven scoreless innings, the game was decided by one swing. Taylor Troutman hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win and end Tennessee’s perfect start.
A dominant performance in the circle and a defining moment at the plate.
