By traditional standards, Luis Gil had a good year when he came back from that lat injury. In 57 innings, he had a 3.32 ERA. That success just wouldn’t have been sustainable over the long haul. His velocity was way down. A pitcher who sat in the high 90s was now sitting 95. Not to mention, his strikeout stuff plummeted. It was the first time in Gil’s career that he had more innings than Ks. In those 57 innings, he struck out just 41. The Yankees weren’t too keen on him starting in the playoffs last year, according to the Athletic’s Chris Kirschner, and his start against the Blue Jays went as poorly as they thought it would.
