Every day, we watch ecosystems degrade and species disappear before our eyes. We’re trying to hold onto what’s left, but it can sometimes feel like nature is slipping through our fingers.
But there is always hope. And part of what brings us hope is rewilding. Of course, preventing damage is always better. But even when nature is pushed to the brink, it is extremely resilient and can always recover.
Rewilding restores what was lost, and there are so many successful examples around the world. Sea otters were wiped out along the west coast during the fur trade, causing urchin populations to explode and overgraze kelp forests. After their reintroduction, the ecosystem is bouncing back!
In other places, coral reefs are being restored with more resilient corals by coralgardeners and the_seapeople_oranglaut. And reshark is bringing leopard sharks back to areas that were once overfished.
No matter what happens, we can’t give up. This World Rewilding Day is a hopeful reminder of that.
