It might be hard to imagine today, but the fight for women’s right to vote in the U.S. took decades. And while the 19th Amendment was officially ratified in 1920, legally guaranteeing American women the right to vote, many women of color remained unable to vote long into the 20th century because of discriminatory voting laws. Many women across lines of race, class, and background organized, picketed, lobbied, and marched – driving what was then seen as a radical change to the Constitution. Among them were leaders such as Sarah J. Garnet, Mabel Ping-Hua Lee, and Ruza Wenclawska, who fought on the front lines for this right. And even now, many communities in our city continue to face barriers to voting. We’re working to change that because democracy works best when every voice counts. #WomensHistoryMonth #VoterRights
