Aboard the USS Yorktown yesterday. Standing where heroes stood, reminded me of what this nation is capable of when we channel our strength toward defense and away from destruction. When I become President, our military will be the most respected force on earth because we will be a beacon of light that protects what matters most: freedom for all. We will honor every man and woman who serves by ensuring their courage is only ever spent defending this nation and the people they love. In 1947, Congress retired the name ‘Department of War’ and replaced it with the Department of Defense. It was a promise that America’s military would only exist to protect, not to provoke. In 2025, that promise was undone with the stroke of a pen. When I take office, I will go further than restoring the old name.
