The U.S. shipbuilding industry faces a major shortage of skilled labor, including welders and pipefitters. Lesley Stahl speaks with apprentices at the Philly Shipyard who have taken on the demanding work, often in tough conditions. They say it beats their old jobs. “Instead of paying out of pocket to go to a trade school, you're getting paid while you learn here the entire time,” says Meg, who previously worked as a cake decorator and a nanny. Apprentices are paid and receive health care benefits while they train. Jeff, another apprentice, adds, “I'm more tired, but it’s more fulfilling to me.
