The Dog Aging Project brings together dog owners, scientists, and veterinarians across the country to study how dogs age. Researchers collect data on dogs’ diets and exercise, analyze blood samples, and conduct MRIs of dogs’ brains. Biologist Matt Kaeberlein, who co-founded the Dog Aging Project in 2014, hopes the findings will reveal new ways to slow aging in both dogs and humans. “I had this light bulb moment,” says Kaeberlein. “I realized, ‘Oh my God, we know about three or four or five ways to slow aging in laboratory animals. Some of those are going to work in dogs.’” He says that the biology of aging is shared across the animal kingdom, particularly across mammals, so what works for dogs may also work for humans. #dogagingproject #longevity #veterinaryscience #dogs
