Rescue workers from the League for the Protection of Birds in south-west France have released the last rehabilitated puffins back into the Atlantic after a catastrophic winter. Successive storms battered the Bay of Biscay this season, washing exhausted and starving birds ashore in their thousands. Already weakened by overfishing, nearly 48,000 were recovered from Portugal to Brittany — with experts warning many more sank before ever reaching the beaches.
