So what’s really happening during HEAT missile armor penetration?
HEAT stands for High-Explosive Anti-Tank — and the science behind it is less about brute force… and more about physics precision.
Unlike traditional kinetic rounds that rely on sheer speed and mass, a HEAT warhead uses a shaped charge. Inside the missile is a carefully engineered hollow cone, usually lined with metal (often copper).
When the explosive detonates, something incredible happens:
The blast collapses the metal liner inward, forming an ultra-high-speed jet of metal particles.Not molten.Not burning.
But traveling at speeds up to 8–10 kilometers per second.
At that velocity, the metal behaves almost like a fluid. The focused jet concentrates enormous energy onto a tiny point on the target’s armor. Instead of “melting” through, it penetrates by applying extreme pressure — ...
