Even before the pandemic, large high street retailers were struggling with their operating costs, high rental and business rate, as consumer behaviour was changing to favour shopping online which some retailers were simply not geared up to cope with. The pandemic only further cemented these habits.   As a result, we are seeing the emergence of more independent boutiques and small retailers in town centres and high streets across the country, taking over the retail spaces that the big names can no longer sustain.
