๐ฆI havenโt lived in Russia for 14 years now. I was born on Sakhalin island and spent the first 17 years of my life there.
Sakhalin island is in the Far East of Russia, very close to Japan, and life there is vastly different from life on the mainland. What is Sakhalin like? A snowy desert, ocean, wild nature, and prices like in Dubai because everything has to be imported. In comparison, life in Moscow seems cheaper, and everyone on the island knows this. Itโs a 9-hour flight to Moscow, so much of my childhood was spent in the air.
๐ข๏ธPeople who work in the oil&gas industry are familiar with Sakhalin. The island is known for its oil and gas reserves, and major companies like Shell and Schlumberger operate there.
But besides oil and gas, Sakhalin is also a seafood paradise. Crabs, sea urchin roe (which is exported to Japan at the price of gold), red caviar, scallops, oyster...
