As an anesthesiologist assistant, there are a few positions in the department you can become. One of them is the board runner! Some places call the position coordinator or liaison. Essentially you are in charge of: keeping tabs on the surgical board, knowing when cases cancel or get added on, making sure there are enough anesthetists to staff the operating rooms, Helping out colleagues when needed with starting cases, ivs, or waking up, Giving morning breaking, lunches, afternoon breaks and dinners. It’s a busy day and your phone will be ringing non-stop but it’s a nice change of pace. Some places have an anesthesiologist do it too.
