According to ancient legend, Sage Mrikanda’s son Markandeya was blessed with great devotion but destined to live only until the age of sixteen. On the final day of his life, Markandeya chose not to fear his fate — instead, he embraced prayer and held on to the Shiva-linga with complete faith.
When Yama, the god of death, arrived to claim his soul, his noose accidentally fell around the Shiva-linga as well. In that moment, Shiva manifested in divine anger — not against Yama — but to protect the innocence of true devotion. Shiva reminded Yama that compassion stands above destiny, and granted Markandeya a long and blessed life.
